Explore the Andriondacks in Lake Placid, NY

My husband and I have been to the cute town of Lake Placid on two occasions and it has so many great things to see and do that we may have to go back a third time!

Lake Placid is located in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains and the rugged scenery is beautiful. Mountains, rocky rivers, serene lakes, and dense forests, it’s really a great place to hike, camp, kayak and enjoy all kinds of outdoor activities. Since it has been home to the Winter Olympics twice, there are plenty of winter sports and activities to enjoy as well. For those who would rather not hike or camp to enjoy a destination, there is plenty of shopping and restaurants for you to enjoy in the downtown.

The town sits on the edge of Mirror Lake and it stays calm year round since motorized boat traffic isn’t allowed. You can kayak or canoe the lake, or walk along the 2.7 mile path around the lake’s edge. You can enjoy the beach in the summer or ice skate or toboggan chute right onto the ice in the winter!

For serious hikers, you can explore Cascade Mountain or any of the shorter hikes in the area. We camped at Wilmington Notch Campground along the AuSable River and found plenty of short hikes along the boulder-filled river.  For those less inclined to hike, you can drive up Veterans Memorial Highway to the top of Whiteface Mountain for some spectacular views. You can enjoy dinner and shopping at the top too!

There is also plenty of shopping and dining in town and we returned repeatedly to the locally brewed Great Adirondack Brewing Company and to the Adirondack Trading Company (they now carry my Adirondacks Bucket List home decor gifts!).

Wherever you go in town you are reminded of the town’s Olympic heritage. You can learn all about it at the Lake Placid Olympic Museum. In winter, you can ski, snowmobile and snowshoe from Whiteface Mountain and Resort and in summer you can mountain bike and enjoy gondola rides. Also in summer, you can try the Lake Placid Bobsled Experience, where you are led by a professional driver down the track.

Whatever time of year you visit, there is plenty to see and enjoy in this Adirondack town!
