Fun in the Sun at Ft Myers Beach, FL

By this time of year in the Midwest a lot of us are dreaming of soaking up some sun and warmer destinations. There does seem to be a yearly migration to Florida and our family was no exception. Our destination was Ft. Myers Beach and this cute town didn’t disappoint.

Located on the gulf side of the state, Ft. Myers Beach is accessible by a long bridge from the mainland. We rented a condo at Harbour House at the Inn and it was perfect. It was in a great location so we could walk to everything and we had a kitchen so we didn’t have to eat out all week. Each morning my husband and I would walk down to Bowditch Point Park at the northwest tip of the island. It was cool and peaceful each morning before the beach activities and Times Square businesses got busy for the day.

This island has a great balance of shopping and restaurants and an equal number of ways to get out and enjoy nature. Our favorite restaurants were Doc Ford's Rum Bar & Grille across the bridge on San Carlos Island and Nervous Nellie’s, both located on the water. We spotted dolphins and pelicans right from our table - great evening entertainment. Of course walking around Times Square is fun evening entertainment too as well as the Sunset Celebration each weekend at the Pier.

One day we rented a pontoon boat and headed to Lovers Key State Park at the south end of Estero Island. It is a beautiful white sand beach that had so much wildlife to see. We pulled right up to the shore and walked the beach, spotting tons of starfish and sea stars along the way. Plenty of dolphins swam by and heron and egrets were plentiful too. And of course we found plenty of sheets, some with crabs and critters but most without.

Other days we spent at Ft. Myers beach, walking the pier or shopping. There were so many beach activities to choose from, so one day the kids even went parasailing. Matanzas Pass Preserve a lovely wildlife sanctuary wasn’t too far and had a nice trail through the mangroves to the bay.

This is one destination that really has something for every family member to enjoy together!
