The best gifts I've ever received weren't the fanciest or the most expensive. They were the ones that showed someone had been paying attention, and I think that's especially true when the gift connects to a place a person loves.
So this year I've been thinking about everyone on my list through that lens. Almost every person I know has a spot that makes them light up, whether it's a hometown, a favorite beach, a state they can't stop talking about, or a coffee shop on the corner. Here are a few ways to match the gift to the person.
For the Artist in Your Life
If someone on your list makes things, they usually love a good journal, a set of notecards, or anything that gives them a reason to pick up a pen. A journal for travel sketches or ideas is a gift that sits on a desk and actually gets used. Notecards are wonderful for artists too, since so many of us love sending a real note to the friends who cheer us on.
For the Small Town Lover
Some people just love where they live, and they'll tell you all about the farmers' market, the harbor, and the best place for pie. For them, I look for something that celebrates their town or state, like a print, a mug, or a pillow with a place on it. It tells them you see how much that place means to them, and that is exactly what makes a gift feel personal.
For the Coffee Drinker
Everybody knows one person who has a favorite mug and will not be separated from it. A mug that celebrates a town or state or their favorite national park they love makes the morning a little better, and it's an easy gift to wrap. Add a bag of their favorite coffee and you're done!
For the Host
When you're invited to someone's home for the holidays, it's nice to arrive with something other than a bottle of wine. A tea towel or a set of coasters is a small gift that gets used all season and long after. They're the kind of thing that sits on the counter and quietly reminds the host of you.
For the Student or the Teacher
Students heading back to campus after the holidays often miss home more than they let on, so a small piece of art or a mug from a place they love goes a long way. For a teacher, a set of notecards works beautifully as a thank you note, because it gives them something real to use all year.
For the Friend Who Moved Away
This might be my favorite one to give. Someone who moved away from a place they loved will almost always light up at a small reminder of it, whether that's a framed print for their new wall or a pillow to make their new space cozy. It says you remember where they came from, and you're still thinking about them.
Starting Small
You don't have to spend a lot to give something thoughtful. A small print or a set of notecards can mean just as much as a big gift, as long as it connects to something the person loves. If you're stuck, ask yourself where the person feels most like themselves, and start there.
Who is on your list this year, and what place comes to mind when you think of them? I would love to hear about it, because I'm always looking for new ideas!
