January in Michigan tends to be all gray skies and quiet days, so I’ve been doing what I always do this time of year, reaching for color. Bright, happy, can’t-ignore-it color. It’s my antidote to winter, and honestly, it’s where my creativity feels most alive right now.
Today I’m heading to Atlanta for the gift show, and I couldn’t be more excited. I love this part of the year, walking the market, spotting new color stories and trends, seeing my artwork on products, and reconnecting with artist friends I only get to see in person once or twice a year. There’s something incredibly energizing about being surrounded by people who make things for a living! Being creative can feel frivolous at time with all that we see in the world today, but I have to remind myself that bringing joy to others with what I create during difficult times has value too.
Back in the studio, I set a personal goal for myself this year: to create at least one painting every week. That intention alone has shifted how I work. I’ve been painting more freely, letting go a bit, and continuing to embrace the imperfect lines and wonkiness that keep showing up in my work. I’m still learning to trust that those imperfect moments are part of what makes the art feel human.
My latest paintings were inspired by travels from this past year, especially the tiles and mosaics I couldn’t stop photographing. The patterns, textures, and color combinations have been finding their way into my sketchbook and onto paper in unexpected ways, and I’m excited to see where they lead next.
I’ll be sharing more from Atlanta soon, along with what’s catching my eye in terms of color, pattern, and product ideas. Until then, I’m leaning into paint, possibility, and a very colorful start to the year!
